FHE pumpkin carving

For family night tonight, we carved our pumpkins that we got at the pumpkin patch a couple of weeks ago. I know, I know. Just like about every other LDS family the Monday before Halloween. But hey, we had fun doing it and here are the pictures to prove it! I like the picture above because before I drew the faces on the pumpkins, I told the kids to draw their pumpkin faces on pieces of paper so I knew what they wanted. You can see them sitting on the table.

Katie really enjoyed watching all of the pumpkins being carved. She got very excited when she could see the faces taking shape.

Once Ashley's pumpkin was carved, she would not stop carrying it with her everywhere she went. She thinks it's the coolest. She informed me after this picture was taken that she was making a face to copy the pumpkin. Nice.

Jacob insisted that he carve his pumpkin. This is the closest he got! On the straight lines, Matt let Jacob hold his hand while he held the knife. Maybe when you're thrity-two Jacob. Then again, maybe not! Knives are dangerous.

I looked over at Katie when I was cleaning out her pumpkin and she was really enjoying herself. She licked the lid of the pumpkin several times. Who knew raw pumpkin could be so appetizing to a two-year old. YUCK! I remember once in grade school, Tara Barnett and I were sitting on the bus coming home from a field trip. She was telling all the kids around us that eating orange peels was so delicious. She asked me if I liked them and I buckled under peer pressure. I told her yes even though I had never tasted them. Lucky for me, she happened to have some left over in her lunch sack! She gave some to me to eat in front of everyone! I slowly took a bite and to my horror, it was disgusting. I had to pull a "mmm-this-is-better-than-chocolate" face for the myriad of kids watching me. When I felt it was safe for me to abandon those nasty things from my already tainted mouth, I spit them out in my hand and threw them on the bus floor. Those things are disgusting! That's what I thought of when Katie was so happily licking the pumpkin. More power to you Katie.

Here are the finished products! Jacob, Ashley and Katie all loved this Halloween activity. They all were very excited to see the face they had imagined and drawn on paper, come to life on the pumpkin. I love to see my kids enjoying life and enjoying being together as a family. It's times like this that I cherish.

Their pumpkins all turned out really cute. It's fun to see that they got to see their imagined faces turn into the real thing. I like seeing kids dig in to get the goop out, too. It's fun to let them get so goopy in a controlled environment.

It's so funny to me that you were suckered into eating an orange peel! Way to go! LOL

I love the orange peel story. I had to fake an "it's so yummy" face when we got Abigail her first "big girl" toothepaste. She didn't want to use it, so I told her I would use it first. It was Strawberry Shortcake toothepaste, pink with sparkles. . . how could it be bad, right? It was disgusting. I faked the smile, brushed her teeth fast, and bought a different kind the next day. Lots of fun :)
